Trade Mark of Tourism Australia
Tennant Creek and Surrounds, Northern Territory, Australia
On the explorers Way (also known as the Sturt Highway), it was here at Tennant Creek that the first European settlers worked on the Overland Telegraph Line in 1872, followed by Australia’s last gold rush in the 1930’s. With a strong aboriginal culture, Tennant Creek is the traditional home to the Warumungu People. The famous landmark to the south of the town “The Devils Marbles”, are part of their Dreamtime stories. Camping is a popular experience and there are many options throughout the surrounding area. Although in the middle of the “Territory”, the landscape is far from barren and varies from open mallee scrub, to the vast horizons of the Barkly Tablelands, to the rocky outcrops of the Davenport Ranges that are best accessed by four wheel drive.
